Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos

Redemptorist Priest and Blessed Martyr of Charity

A Saintly Life

Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos (1819–1867) was a Redemptorist priest of extraordinary holiness who labored for souls in the United States during the turbulent mid-nineteenth century. Born in Füssen, Bavaria, he came to America in 1843 — the very year Saint Mary of Victories was founded — and spent his life in pastoral ministry among German-speaking Catholic immigrants.

Connection to Saint Mary of Victories

Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos’s connection to Saint Mary of Victories reflects the deep Redemptorist roots of this church. The Redemptorists were pioneers of immigrant Catholic ministry in 19th-century America, and Seelos embodied their charism of preaching, hearing confessions, and caring for the spiritual and corporal needs of the poor and the sick.

Ministry and Death

Seelos was known for his joyful spirit, his gentle approach to the sacrament of confession, and his heroic charity toward the sick. In 1867, while ministering to yellow fever victims in New Orleans, he contracted the disease himself and died on October 4 — the feast of Saint Francis of Assisi, whose name he bore.

Beatification — Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos was beatified by Pope John Paul II on April 9, 2000, in Rome. His feast day is celebrated on October 5.

A Model for Our Parish

Blessed Seelos is a patron and model for the community of Saint Mary of Victories — a reminder that holiness is expressed in cheerful, self-giving service, and that the gateway to heaven is not status or learning but love poured out for God and neighbor.
